Excerpt from What the Heart Wants
Cam doesn’t say a word, but his gaze is all over my face, piercing right through me, trying to dig for answers I’m not ready to give him. A melancholy comes over him, and he firms his jaw and nods. “Okay, another time. For now, only the good.”
This makes me smile huge, and that melancholy I saw slip over Cam’s features disappears at the sight of me happy.
“Dinner tonight. Taking you to Twenty-One Steak.”
“Fancy?”
He grins. “A sexy dress would not go unappreciated. Now kiss me again before I go home to change and head to the office.”
I pull him close and lay one on him. Again, it turns into a mini make-out session.
When he pulls away, he sucks in a harsh breath. “Damn. Missed this in my life, baby.”
“Missed what, honey?”
“That feeling of never wanting to leave my girl. Having the fire inside me that always wants her in my arms, heart pressed to mine. Never had that before you. Never had it after. Pleased I’ve got it back.”
This time, I’m incapable of holding back the tears, so I let them fall down my cheeks. He wipes them away with his thumbs, kisses me softly, and then steps away.
“Go to work,” he says grouchily as though it’s my fault he has to leave when I would have been happy never leaving my little apartment…or the bed for that matter.
“Okay, honey.”
“Stay, Suda Kaye,” he says softly and walks around to the driver’s side door of his shiny boxy Ranger Rover.
I frown as his words penetrate my consciousness. “What do you mean?”
He smiles, one arm resting over the top of his SUV, the other holding the door open. His golden blond waves are blowing in the breeze, giving his handsome face a much softer, less rugged, and more GQ appeal. The sun is shining, and he squints as he gifts me the sexiest grin.
“Just stay,” he repeats.
“Stay.” I shake my head and smile at him.
“Yeah, sweets, just stay…stay forever.” He taps the top of his car.
Without further comment, he gets into his car, shuts the door, starts the engine, and is off to his home to change and then go to work.
I cross my fingers and watch as his car disappears into traffic and down the street. I send up a silent prayer to my mother, to God, to whoever will listen that I’m capable of granting that wish.
Just stay.

MORE ABOUT WHAT THE HEART WANTS
“Fly free.”
For ten years those words, written on pink parchment paper in her mother’s beautiful handwriting, have been Suda Kaye Ross’s guiding star. Every year on her birthday, Suda Kaye opens another of the letters her mother penned before she passed, heeding the advice inside as she fills her life with experiences. From Italy to Australia, from Rio to Russia, she’s slaked her wanderlust. And then, on her twenty-eighth birthday, she opens the letter that sends her home.
Returning to Colorado means confronting everything—and everyone—she left behind, including her cherished sister, Evie, and her first love, Camden Bryant. Suda Kaye and Cam spent four years and one unforgettable night together. Given the way she ran out on him, it’s no surprise that he’s wary, resentful…and engaged to someone else. Evie, hardworking and überresponsible, just wants her sister to put down roots at last.
For Evie’s sake, and her own, Suda Kaye is trying to build a new life, all the while wondering whether it’s too late to come back home—or if the most important part of her never really left.
