Sneak Peek

Three rounds never felt so long, and Chad has a few moment where I think it’s all over for him. Every time the slightly smaller guy gets him down on the ground he loses his advantage and takes a beating. Each time the round ends I thank the invisible Gods and clean his bloodied face, praying they won’t call a technical knockout because there’s just so much fucking blood. He spits out after rinsing his mouth and a tooth comes with it. This isn’t boxing. It’s barbaric, primal and animalistic fighting that I wasn’t prepared for.
When I look at him splayed out in the backstage area I’m worried at the beating his body has taken. Tatum stands beside him, the tears still pouring down her face. Lola is there too, a few steps back and far better equipped to deal with what he looks like after a fight.
“I’m so sorry, Pepper Spray,” He mumbles to her, his swollen bloodied hand holding hers. The medical staff push her out of the way and she turns to look at me before running out of the room. This isn’t for everyone. I follow her, but Lotus stays planted in the corner, seasoned at where to wait while they stick him back together again. Just outside, in a dark little passageway, I find Tatum with her back against the wall and her head in her hands. The sound of her soft cries are drowned out by the cheering from the arena. She’s too soft for this place, too good for all this violence, and her heart can’t take what she signed up for.
“Are you okay?” She look up at me with puffy, red eyes and she shakes her head. She throws her arms around me, shaking and crying, taking her comfort from me. When I eventually hold her in my arms, it all feels so wrong, but so right at the same time. I’m like a thief in the darkness, hiding in the backstage alley, taking what doesn’t belong to me and enjoying the tender moment where I’m the one she needs. I hold onto her and the warmth is magical. Temptation is beautiful, the way it snakes in when we’re not expecting it, slithering between us and revealing feelings we hadn’t seen before.

Aside from these crazy antics they are both moms and wives, you can catch them at the school tuck shop or the side of the sports field supporting our families.
