I snuck back into the bathroom and turned on the shower, which rained down with a pleasant force.
At the Compound, there was never enough hot water for more than a quick shower. But now I washed my hair and body with a little bottle of shampoo I found in the hotel’s shower stall, while the hot water came pouring down on me. After I was finished, I lingered awhile, basking in it. Because there was nobody to yell at me to get moving.
Then, feeling more refreshed than I had in a long time, I toweled off, listening to my stomach growl. There was a big mirror over the sink, which I found fascinating. We didn’t have mirrors at the Compound, except for tiny ones in the shower, meant for shaving. Because vanity is a sin.
Except for the occasional reflection off of a window, I hadn’t seen myself properly in years. I thought of myself as a scrawny thing. So I was surprised to find that my shoulders were much broader than they used to be. I looked stronger and more solid than I’d thought.
My face wasn’t the same as I remembered, either. I saw a squarer jaw then I used to have, and my hair was bleached out from the summer’s sunshine. Not half bad, I realized.
Standing there, I looked a long time at myself. Which was precisely why there were no mirrors in Paradise.
Wearing a towel, I tiptoed back in the room, testing the seams of my clothing again.
“They’re not dry, I’ll bet,” Caleb said sleepily.
“Not quite,” I said, keeping my voice low, though there was nobody else here to eavesdrop on us. I wasn’t used to being alone with Caleb. It seemed impossibly luxurious. Even better than a long shower.
If I’d thought he would be embarrassed to wake up in that bed with me, I’d thought wrong. He raised his arms up over his head, which made more of his fine chest visible, and smiled at me. “Happy to see you on your feet. Come here.” He patted the empty bed beside him.
Feeling self-conscious, I padded over there and perched on the edge.
Caleb sat up, and I put all my focus on keeping my eyes where they should be, and not letting them wander down his bare chest. Ever since we were fifteen, and he began to fill out, the ridges and valleys of his abs have fascinated me. I’ve had to be very disciplined with myself, or I’d always be staring at them.
He reached up and put a palm on my forehead. “Well, you just got out of the shower, which should heat you up. But I think…” he leaned in and pressed his lips to my forehead, the way my mother used to check for fever when I was small.
All my blood stopped circulating.
“Hmm,” he said, backing off a few inches. “You kicked it, didn’t you? The fever broke?”
But speaking now would have been impossible. Because I was just too aware of his body, and the way his pecs had brushed mine when he’d (sort of) kissed me. So a shrug was all I could manage.
“We have to wait for our clothes to dry. Yours were coated in dirt,” he said, grabbing his pillow and punching it against the headboard. He sat back. “Bring that knapsack over here, would you? I have a little food.”
I shot up and practically sprinted across the room, needing a little distance.

MORE About Goodbye Paradise

Most people called it a cult. But for twenty years, Josh and Caleb called it home.

In Paradise, there is no television. No fast food. Just long hours of farm work and prayer on a dusty Wyoming ranch, and nights in a crowded bunkhouse. The boys of the Compound are kept far from the sinners’ world.

But Joshua doesn’t need temptation to sin. His whole life, he’s wanted his best friend, Caleb. By day they work side by side. Only when Josh closes his eyes at night can they be together the way he craves.

It can never be. And his survival depends on keeping his terrible desires secret.

Caleb has always protected Josh against the worst of the bullying at the Compound. But he has secrets of his own, and a plan to get away — until it all backfires.

Josh finds himself homeless in a world that doesn’t want him. Can Caleb find him in time? And will they find a place of safety, where he can admit to Josh how he really feels?

Warning: Contains a hot male/male romance, copious instances of taking the Lord's name in vain, and love against the kitchen counter. This book was previously released under the title: In Front of God & Everyone.

Excerpt: Meet Jude and Sophie

I jumped off the bed and pulled open the door. And there she stood in the dark, arms crossed, looking up at me with big, angry eyes.
“Hi?” I said, confused.
Before I knew what was happening, she stepped over the threshold. Sophie kicked the door shut and then leaned against it. “Are you staying in Colebury?” she demanded. “I have to know.”
“Uh.” Shit. “I don’t have much choice. No other garage will hire me.”
My brain was playing catch-up. But my body was clueing in to the fact that Sophie and I were barely two feet apart and standing within spitting distance of the bed where we’d had more sex than sleep. Her chest rose and fell with quick breaths, and her cheeks were flushed.
Wait—one cheek was redder than the other. Was that a handprint? I pushed the hair away from her face for a closer look. “What the fuck?” I whispered. “Who did that?”
“Who do you think?” Her words were like little chips of ice.
Jesus. “Your father?” With a gentle thumb, I traced the outline of what must have been a horrible slap. “Did you tell him you were with…?”
“No! I’m not an idiot.” She grabbed my wrist and flung my hand away from her face. Then she grabbed my flannel shirt in two hands and looked up into my eyes. Her gaze was fiery and fierce. “Can you be the one person who doesn’t make me feel stupid today?”
Time paused like a held breath as Sophie’s hands pressed against my body, their warmth searing my pecs. We stared at each other while confusion rippled through me. And then everything got even more complicated. Sophie rose to her toes and yanked me into a kiss.
I’d never been so stunned. The feel of her soft mouth on mine was so unexpected and yet so familiar it was too much to bear. As our lips did a slow slide together, my breath hitched. But I couldn’t pull back. One more taste, my asshole brain suggested. Bracing both of my palms against the door, I leaned into her sweet mouth.
She opened for me immediately. When our tongues touched, I had the sensation of falling or running too fast downhill. She tasted like Sophie. She tasted like the best thing that had ever happened to me.
Warm hands curled around my biceps. When I nipped her lip, she whimpered, and my dick perked up like a lonely stray who suddenly smelled a feast. I thrust my tongue against hers, and she moaned into my mouth. Her hands went to the buttons on my shirt.
That’s when I remembered who I was, and just how bad an idea this was.
Although it hurt me, I dragged my mouth off Sophie’s.

She’s the only one who ever loved him—and the only one he can never have.

Jude lost everything one spring day when he crashed his car into an apple tree on the side of the road. A man is dead, and there's no way he can ever right that wrong. He’d steer clear of Colebury, Vermont forever if he could. But an ex-con in recovery for his drug addiction can’t find a job just anywhere.

Sophie Haines is stunned by his reappearance. After a three year absence, the man who killed her brother and broke her heart is suddenly everywhere she turns. It’s hard not to stare at how much he’s changed. The bad boy who used to love her didn’t have big biceps and sun-kissed hair. And he’d never volunteer in the church kitchen.

No one wants to see Sophie and Jude back together, least of all Sophie's police chief father. But it's a small town. And forbidden love is a law unto itself.

Sizzling Sneak Peek

When I wake up, there’s light escaping around the edges of our bedroom blinds. And there’s a muscled, naked man sleeping with one tattooed arm slung around my waist. I gingerly slide toward the edge of the bed, but the arm tightens its grip. “No,” Wes says sleepily.
“Let me take a leak,” I whisper.
“Come right back.”
“Deal.” On my way to the john I glance at his relaxed face. He may have been talking in his sleep just now, he looks so passed out.
After I do my thing and brush my teeth, I duck into the kitchen to grab a glass of water. I’ve chugged half of it when I hear soft footsteps in the hall, and I turn to find Wes in the doorway, slowly stroking an ambitious-looking erection. His gaze tracks me across the room as I set the glass in the sink.
“You didn’t come right back,” he rasps.
“Thirsty,” I mumble. I’m distracted by the seductive motion of his hand on his dick. The blowjobs we exchanged the other night were too hurried. Satisfying, yes, but not enough. It’s been too long since we’ve had an entire night to ourselves. An entire night to tease and explore and drive each other wild.
“Why are you still wearing those?” Wes’s eyes gleam in the early morning light as he gestures to my boxers.
He’s got a point. My boxers drop to the tiled floor. “Why didn’t you wake me up when you got home?” I counter.
He grins. “You were deep under.” His voice is gravel, and just the familiar smoky sound of it gets my blood pumping. “And we have a whole week.” He says these last three words the way someone else might say ten million dollars. Wes probably already has ten million dollars. His family is rich, and he doesn’t give a damn. What he wants most is me. And I’d be lying if I said that didn’t light me up. Wes is never stingy with his affection.

They don't play for the same team. Or do they?

Jamie Canning has never been able to figure out how he lost his closest friend. Four years ago, his tattooed, wise-cracking, rule-breaking roommate cut him off without an explanation. So what if things got a little weird on the last night of hockey camp the summer they were eighteen? It was just a little drunken foolishness. Nobody died.

Now, with their college teams set to face off at the national championship, he’ll finally get a chance to apologize. But all it takes is one look at his longtime crush, and the ache is stronger than ever.

Jamie has waited a long time for answers, but walks away with only more questions—
