He’s one of the last of a powerful but vanishing bloodline …
She’s the one woman who could expose him to the world…

SNEAK PEEK

Picture
Madelyn woke slowly, bit by bit, stretching the muscles here and there and enjoying the warmth of the bed she was laying in and the hard body that she was half sprawled out on.
Hard body . . .
She tensed and opened one eye to peek at the man in the bed with her as memories of last night came flooding back. She’d had a terrible nightmare, and then Grigori Barinov had made it snow and held her until she fell asleep. She wasn’t sure what shocked her more, having fallen asleep with a stranger after her nightmares, or that she watched him take a vast thunderstorm over Moscow and make it snow.
Just for me.
A smile curved her lips and she tried to hide it. Men didn’t even open doors for her, but this man had made it snow. It was the most romantic thing that had ever happened to her.
She enjoyed her moment to study him. The sensual lips and pale gold brows. He was gorgeous. She knew she kept thinking about it, but damn, he was beautiful. It almost hurt to look at him.
One of his arms curled around her waist. The other lay against his stomach. The tattoo on his forearm was in open view and she examined it. The tattoo was stunning. More symbolic of a dragon than lifelike, she could see the dragon was clearly in a curled position. One of its eyes was closed, but the other was open and fixed on her. Her attention turned to the signet ring on his hand. The serpent biting its tail. A symbol for eternity. The ouroboros. The jeweled eyes of the serpent were made of tiny bright sapphires.
“Did you rest well?” Madelyn jumped at the sound of his voice, her body clashing against the arm wrapped around her waist. Her eyes flew to his and her knees weakened at the sight of his soft, indulgent smile.
“Er . . . yes.” She stammered, trying not to think of how many women over the countless years he’d seduced with a look. It was a look that promised whispers in the dark, glittering jewels and naked bodies entwined on beds of furs. But when she looked at him she could see a future unfurling like a new flower, a future that his bright gleaming eyes and strong hands hinted at as they held her captive against him in bed.
“Good.” He suddenly flipped them so she lay beneath him on the bed. A gasp escaped her and she tilted her head back to look up at him.
“What are you—”
With a wicked smile he dipped his head to hers. The kiss burned and sizzled, sparking part of her to life that she hadn’t even known existed. It seemed in the last day her body had completely changed inside, making her aware that she wasn’t as in control of herself as she’d always believed. She should not be turned on by a stranger’s kiss, but she was.
Oh yes, hell yes. She tried to wrap her arms around his neck, but he caught her wrists and pinned them into the bed on either side of her head. His large, strong hands curled around her wrists, making her feel small, helpless . . . She strained against the hold, struggling just enough to test his power.
His blue eyes flashed with molten fire. “My bed, my woman,” he purred in a low seductive rumble that seemed to ripple through her entire body. She was hyper-aware of him, from the wisps of his hair brushing against her neck as he nuzzled her throat to the scrape of the faint shadow of a golden-brown beard along his jaw. He may have worn an expensive suit and looked like an Armani model, but he acted like an ancient warrior—one who took what he wanted. God help her, she liked it.
His natural dominance frustrated and aroused her at the same time. She should have been scared, kissing a stranger in a foreign city in his bed. But bit by bit, Grigori was becoming less a stranger to her.
He tugged on her bottom lip. The weight of his body on hers was thrilling and yet she felt safe. How was that possible? She’d never had sex before, had never been all that interested in the whole idea of sex, but right now all she could think about was having him take her and make love to her, wildly, roughly. Her body was in total overload with all of the sensations and new hungers.
“I can feel you thinking.” He teased before he moved his lips in a trail of kisses down her neck.
“Not thinking,” she panted. “I promise.” She rolled her hips, inviting him to lay deeper into the cradle of her thighs. It was time to get rid of that pesky virginity.
Grigori’s warm laughter on her neck made her quiver. He lifted his head, their gazes locked. His body still trapped hers, his hand still holding her wrists captive.
“I have so little control around you,” he whispered.
“Is that a bad thing?” she asked, loving the way his lips twitched. He was trying not to smile and for some reason she adored that. It was a challenge. What could she do to make him lose that control and grin at her?
“It can be. You are untouched and I might be too rough.”
Every muscle in her tensed, her body going rigid. “You, you know that I’m a . . .” the word failed to come out.
“A virgin? Yes.” His eyes hardened and he frowned.
Suddenly she couldn’t breathe, her lungs seized in panic and she struggled. How did he know? How the hell could he know she was a virgin?
“Let go of me,” she demanded.
Grigori slid off her at once, as though he’d expected this.
She grabbed the top blanket off the bed and dragged it around her like a protective shield. Being a virgin had not been something she wanted him to know. Didn’t it freak out guys to be with a virgin? That’s what she’d heard, anyway. And just how had he figured it out? Was she a bad kisser? Was it because he was a dragon? Had he sensed something or was she acting like a virgin? Maybe she . . .
“Madelyn, do not be angry with me.”
She lifted her chin. “I’m not. It’s just . . . How did you know?”
He slowly skirted the bed and when she retreated, he paused leaning against the nearest bedpost, his blue eyes changing to liquid amber.
“Your scent. It’s like a potent aphrodisiac.” He licked his lips, the action seductive and a little frightening.
“My scent?” She kept the blanket wrapped around her and continued to retreat until her back bumped into the wall.
Grigori smiled crookedly as he seemed to realize he had effectively cornered her.
“It’s like Georgian wine with a hint of berries . . . and rain.”
Madelyn stared at him, trying to process that before she lifted a lock of her hair up and took a sniff. Nothing but a faint scent of the shampoo she’d used a day ago. She didn’t smell like a thing. He was creeping closer, his long elegant fingers trailing along the bedspread and she was momentarily distracted by imagining those fingertips gliding along her skin, sliding into her. Her body quivered with new hungers and Grigori’s nostrils flared.
“It’s almost impossible not to touch you. From the first moment I picked up Barrow’s book back at the Russian State Library your scent has been torturing me with its sweetness. Madelyn,” he growled her name in a subtle warning.
“My sc—scent?” She couldn’t believe she’d stuttered. It wasn’t like her at all, but neither was she the type to tremble and quake at a man’s touch, let alone a scorching look. Not that she’d honestly had much experience with men sending scorching looks her way.
“You know a fair bit about dragon mythology, don’t you?” he asked, taking one step closer.
She nodded, suspicious.
“And what do dragons love to eat?”
The moment she realized the answer, Grigori’s wicked grin grew.
She didn’t stutter this time, but her heart was pounding wildly.
“Virgins . . .”

“I was too restless to dress for bed. During dinner, your mother mentioned the gallery, and I decided to come and see it myself.”
“In other words, you were hoping a visit to my ancestors would put you to sleep.” It was so easy to tease her.
She scoffed in mock outrage. “I never said that!” She titled her chin and shot him a saucy look that punched him in the stomach. There was something there, at the edges of his memory, so faint, like the first breath upon waking. What was it about Ivy that ensnared him? Colors seemed deeper, sounds clearer, his heart beat like a wild rabbit’s, and he lived from moment to moment just to be close to her. A primal urge to catch her, keep her close, filled his being. He knew she was the answer, but he didn’t know what the question was. He sought memories he couldn’t place, so distant and long ago, they were just out of reach, like he was chasing phantoms of his youth.
Ivy stepped back, her eyes leaving his face as she studied the fire, and shivered.
“Who are you, Ivy?” he whispered, cupping her chin and turning her face toward his.
“If you do not know, I cannot tell you,” she replied, and then with a little chuckle she added, “Našti garaves muca ande gono, lake vundžja ka-sitjaren-pe.”
“What does that mean?” he asked. The words had been another language, soft and rhythmic. The effect on him was hypnotic. He could have listened to her speak like that deep into the night.
“It’s Romani for ‘the truth will eventually reveal itself.’ My father is Romani. I am half Romani.” Her hushed response sounded like a confession.
“Your mother?” he prompted, gripped by curiosity. He’d assumed she was possibly Italian but a Gypsy? Definitely not. It did explain her unique but beautiful coloring, though.
“English,” she replied. “Does it shock you, my lord? To have two Gypsies under your roof?” Her tone turned frosty. “Will you have Gordon counting the silver and locking it away now that you know what we are?”
A prickle of irritation stung his skin. He didn’t give a damn that she was half Romani. Her father was rich, and he had brought Ivy up in society to be an intelligent and fierce woman. There was nothing wrong with that. Leo may have been a traditionalist in many matters, but never about men making a life for themselves. If anything, he wished to commend Mr. Leighton on his success. But the last thing he wanted to think about in that moment was her father. All he wanted was to hold her in his arms and kiss her, the way he’d been longing to from the moment she’d descended the stairs for dinner and he’d been captivated by her radiant smile and honey-brown eyes.
“What you are…is my guest,” he answered.
Her lips parted, no doubt to protest with that all-too-sharp tongue of hers, but he didn’t give her a chance. He held the back of her neck with one hand and slanted his mouth down over hers in a possessive, silencing kiss.
Let her argue with this.
The swell of triumph was quickly consumed by his own desire to lose himself in her and the lingering spell of her lips. After her initial shock, she gave in and curled her arms around his neck. He drew her backward until the backs of his knees bumped into a chair. He settled down and pulled her crossways onto his lap. Her gown rustled as it fell over his legs. She felt good, so bloody good in his arms. He continued to explore her mouth; then he left little kisses along her jaw and down to where her neck met her shoulder.
Her elegant, slender fingers threaded in his hair, lightly tugging on the strands as she responded to his attentions with delightful abandon. The crack and snap of the logs in the fire were the only sounds aside from their shared breathing. The warmth of the flames heated Ivy’s back and Leo’s hands as they traced her spine. Everything about holding her, kissing her felt right. No doubts intruded on this perfect kiss.
God, please never let this end. He murmured the silent prayer over and over in his heart.
***
“Leo,” she breathed in his ear. “I feel so strange,” she confessed before pressing a kiss to his chin.
He didn’t let up but pulled her closer, one hand sliding up her skirts, tracing her stocking-covered calf.
“Strange?” he asked as he twirled his fingers in the ribbons that held her garter up.
The touch of his fingers burned her skin and made her tingle in secret places.
“Light-headed, hot and cold all over.” As she spoke, a little shiver moved through her. He kissed her neck and then her shoulder and collarbone, only increasing her physical symptoms.
“I’m doing something right, then.” He kissed her mouth and she smiled, delighted anew at the feel of their lips melding together.
“Do you trust me?” he asked.
“I…uh…” She did trust him. She always had. Sixteen years away hadn’t changed that. Leo was a man she would follow anywhere if he asked her to.
“Let me pleasure you, please?” With gentle but determined hands, he explored her undergarments. Every rational thought screamed at her to deny him what he sought, but every carnal desire and instinct led her back to one gasping reply.
“Yes.”
“Thank God.” He inched her closer and parted her legs with his hands. She gave him better access but jerked when he touched her.
“Easy, love, easy.” His gentle shushing soothed her. She tried to absorb the shocking sensation of his fingers as they stroked over her tender flesh. It took all of her control not to clamp her thighs together at the sudden rush of wetness.
“Look at me,” he commanded.
She realized her eyes had closed. With a little sigh, she met his gaze. Fires burned in his eyes, the searing heat of his own desire an almost tangible caress.
“Do you know how beautiful you are?” The tips of their noses touched as he continued to stroke her. When his thumb swept over the bundle of nerves, she jolted as though from an electric shock.
“You are beautiful, Ivy, so beautiful it makes me ache.”
She had never cared before about having an effect on a man. Beauty was often a curse because men would see only her face and care so little for what was in her mind, but Leo was her real weakness. If he thought she was beautiful, then she was. It did funny things to her heart and scared her witless.
His fingers between her legs became more insistent, and she shifted restlessly against him. He held her, moving with her whenever she twisted and writhed as though they were fashioned of the same body and soul. If she withdrew, he followed; if she pressed toward him, he gave way, like one connected being.
Their mouths joined again, and she dug her hands into his hair, trying to attach herself to him, press into him as much as she could. A tightness coiled in her belly and a ripple of fear followed. She couldn’t think, couldn’t breathe as her body started a furious flight toward the sky, yet she didn’t leave Leo’s lap.
“Let me see your eyes.”
The primal sound jarred her and spurred her those last few gasping breaths to a place she’d never experienced. Her eyes locked with his, and she clung to him as the tension in her body exploded in a blinding wave of pleasure. She was dying. Surely nothing so powerful, so wonderful could exist on earth. The captivating gleam of his eyes absorbed her soul, consuming her. Moonlight and firelight shared space in his spellbinding stare. His lips were parted and his warm breath fanned her face. The past held no power to what lay between them in that moment. He wasn’t a young man, and she wasn’t the girl called Button anymore. The distance of time that once separated them was gone. They were simply lovers, exploring carnal desires and lost in the ecstasy. How was it possible to feel such intimacy with a man she hadn’t seen in so many years?
“My God, Ivy,” he whispered, his fingers still moving inside her. She responded with a gasp as little twitches of echoing pleasure shot through her. He slowly removed his hand and held her close to him, as though he sought to protect her.
“That was your first…wasn’t it.” It was not a question.
She nodded and was relieved it was too dark for him to see her blush.
“I am honored that you shared it with me.” His voice was rough. He kissed her soundly, lulling her body into a state of bliss. It would have been so easy to stay there in his arms, enjoying the intimacy, but deep in her heart she knew it couldn’t last, knew it was a huge mistake.

She objects. But he's about to overrule the laws of attraction....in this sneak peek of Legally Charming by Lauren Smith releasing March 13th!

Picture
Jared remained behind in the conference room with Felicity as he gathered up the contracts he had revised during negotiations.
“Your boss drives a stiff bargain for her design fees,” Jared mused softly as he ruffled the papers before slipping them into his briefcase.
Felicity raised a brow, feeling her temperature rise as she sensed he was challenging her somehow. Not in a bad way, but he was…testing her.
“Sabine is one of the best interior designers in the country, and with her master’s in the arts, she is unparalleled in her profession.”
His lips twitched. “I’m not disputing that, sweetheart, but she’s expensive, and a good lawyer always tries to trim costs for his clients.” He sidled a step closer to her, and her entire body tensed with anticipation. They weren’t arguing, not quite, but the way he said “sweetheart” in that dark, soft, seductive voice while disagreeing with her… Felicity had the sudden desire to drag him into the nearest coat closet and shred his clothes to get to him. But this was work; she couldn’t be caught with Jared. She’d promised Sabine she would keep things professional.
“You could hire someone else, but you’d sacrifice quality,” Felicity replied.
“We could, but the Worthingtons want the best, and I believe Sabine is it.”
She tried not to look his way, but it was impossible to resist. When she peeped at him from beneath her lashes, he was watching her, a narrow-eyed expression hardening his features. For a long second Felicity feared neither of them would speak. A thousand things to say came to her lips, but never left them as she struggled to find the right words. Would they talk about last night? Did he feel the tension of working together like this, too? The tightness in her chest eased as he opened his mouth.
“What was with the note this morning?” He gripped the back of one of the conference chairs, knuckles white as he leaned on it.
Damn, Layla should have warned her that Jared had a scary lawyer-style scowl. Was this how he was at all business meetings when he wanted answers? His intensity was sucking up in all the air in the room.
She swallowed hard. “I…I’m sorry about the note.” She shored up her confidence, knowing she had to own up to the fact that she had run this morning. “I had to leave because I was running late to get here. There wasn’t time for—”
“For goodbye?” He cut her off, and the way he whispered the word, she heard the hurt in his voice, the wounded acceptance of what they’d shared coming to an end. He shrugged, as though trying to rid himself of a great weight that rested there.
“Yes.” It felt like she was sinking into the floor. She’d just left him without an explanation, yet it felt as though they were talking about something deeper, a more permanent issue that lay between them. It was scary as hell to think about.
“It’s just one little word, Felicity.” His tone was still soft, hurt, and it shocked her. Her leaving really had upset him.
It was supposed to be this way, this goodbye…but suddenly the idea was unbearable.
“I’m sorry,” she replied, her voice shaking. “We both know that this thing…whatever it is…won’t work out in the long run. I’m not staying in Chicago, not if I get the job I want in Los Angeles, and you’ve built your career here. The deeper we go, we can’t…” She struggled with the words. “So I thought I’d just make a clean break.” There, she’d said it.
“You never even gave us a chance. You don’t know what it would have been like between us.” Jared released his grip on the chair and raked a furious gaze over the room before settling on her.
“What would have been the point of that? I’ll be leaving next year. This isn’t permanent for me.” Each word hurt as she spoke, but it was the truth. She’d never planned on staying here, no matter how much she’d fallen in love with the city and the friends she’d made. She hadn’t found any museums willing to take her on here, or she would have stayed.
“What’s the point? When you have feelings for someone, there’s always a point, Felicity. You don’t walk away from the chemistry we have. When I touch you? It makes my entire body burn. I’ve never felt that way about anyone else.” He spoke so desperately, a quiet rage in his eyes as though he fought to hide how much he was hurting. “Shouldn’t we have at least given it a shot? Hell, we might have been terrible together, but I wanted to take that chance.” His jaw clenched as he swallowed whatever else he had planned to say.
“You really wanted me?” She couldn’t believe it. A guy like him could have anyone. Why did he want someone like her? She wasn’t good enough for him. She was… Dark voices from her past slithered through her. Hateful words she knew couldn’t be true, yet she still believed them anyway. She wasn’t good enough for him. Just a mousy little girl from a small town in Nebraska. She’d been a waitress at an Applebee’s in high school while he’d probably been studying in law school. It just didn’t…fit. They didn’t fit.
His eyes darkened. “There you go again, with that look on your face.”
“What look?” she demanded, irritation and pain prickling her inside like deep-rooted thorns digging into flesh.
Jared walked around the table to stand in front of her. She’d almost forgotten how tall he was, but as he towered over her, forcing her to tilt her head back, she remembered the way his long, lean body had curled around hers in bed. Protective, warm, seductive. A combination that was fatal to her heart.
He cupped her chin and turned her face to the right where a gilt-framed mirror hung on the wall. Embarrassment hollowed her out inside as she saw her face. Eyes wide, lips trembling, a heavy sadness painted its broad brush across her features, which now flamed red with shame.
“That look,” he breathed in a disappointed sigh. “Like you can’t believe that anyone would want you.” Anger snapped and burned in his eyes like hungry flames devouring tinder. He didn’t unleash it though, didn’t hurt her. He only muttered a strangled curse before his fingers dropped from her chin to the back of her head, his fingers fisting into her hair as he dragged her into his arms.
Mouth open in shock, Felicity was unprepared for his punishing kiss. The edge of violent desperation that sparked from his lips and the way he savaged her heart and soul with the pain she tasted in that kiss. His pain and hers. She had hurt him. But she couldn’t take it back, could not turn back the clock to undo this morning. Her hands rested on his chest, feeling the faint thump-thump of his heartbeat beneath her palms. Her own heartbeat echoed his, like a dove cooing to its mate.
Whenever he kissed her, she lost all sense of self and time. She found herself swept into a secret place where only sensations and emotions reigned. It wasn’t something she could fight, nor did she want to. If only she could stay like this in his arms forever and not have to face reality.
Jared brushed his lips back and forth over hers, and she tried to press close again. He shook his head and stepped back. “You’re killing me, princess.” His words were husky and a little rough. He licked his lips and then tilted his head back and sucked in a deep breath.
Felicity watched him, her body shaking with need, her chest squeezing her heart in its iron fist.
“You’re afraid,” he said. “You’re so young. I keep forgetting that. Just a kid in some ways.”
She started to protest, but he held up his hand.
“You don’t know how to make a leap of faith. I get that. It’s scary as hell. We probably aren’t right for each other. Trust me, I know that. We’d never have time to be together between my work and your school. I get that, too.” He dragged his fingers through his hair and reached for his coat. As he slid his coat on, he stepped away from her, and the feeling of that distance cut her soul deep. How could someone she’d only known a few days make her feel like this? Like her heart couldn’t beat if he walked out that door?
“Jared—”
“I like you.” A rueful smile twisted his lips. “You made me…feel. It’s been a long time since anyone’s done that. But if you aren’t ready, I’m not going to push you.”
His words were destroying her as much as they saved her. She couldn’t have anyone in her life, not anyone she loved. In a way he was right. She was afraid he’d be too perfect, and once he left her, no other man would ever measure up. The idea of spending the rest of her life someday with another man…it left a sour taste upon her lips.
A thousand words hung on her lips, yet she couldn’t say a single one. He seemed to read her silence as affirmation of his accusations.
“Thank you for yesterday. It was nice.” He stepped toward her again and pressed his lips to her forehead in a light kiss. “Goodbye, princess.” He lingered, his warm breath fanning her cheeks and his hands on her upper arms as he held her close just one moment longer. Her heart beat hard against her ribs, and she couldn’t speak past the slicing pain in her tight throat as it constricted.
And with that he left.
Felicity crumpled into the nearest conference chair, staring blinding ahead of her. Jared Redmond had cut out her heart and walked away with it. She’d practically challenged him to do it, and he had.
It was better this way.
Yet it felt as though she’d betrayed herself by not running after him. He had wanted her, but was he right about what he’d said? She believed she didn’t belong with a guy like him or his glittering world. Even if she could convince herself she and Jared could be together, it was crazy to think it could work. When would she ever get to see him? Their schedules were impossible to match, so what was the point? She would leave Chicago and any relationships she had behind. Just let it go. A terrible hollowness filled her until her entire body echoed with its emptiness. She hadn’t known how full of happiness she’d been until she’d lost it all, when she’d lost Jared.

Lauren Smith is an Oklahoma attorney by day, author by night who pens adventurous and edgy romance stories by the light of her smart phone flashlight app. She knew she was destined to be a romance writer when she attempted to re-write the entire Titanic movie just to save Jack from drowning. Connecting with readers by writing emotionally moving, realistic and sexy romances no matter what time period is her passion. She’s won multiple awards in several romance subgenres including: New England Reader’s Choice Awards, Greater Detroit BookSeller’s Best Awards, Amazon.com Breakthrough Novel Award Quarter-Finalist and a Semi-Finalist for the Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley Award.
