Why do we LOVE Rock Star Romances? Jade C. Jamison gives us a few reason why in our FIRST EVER Guest Post! I bet you will agree with some her answers. I know we do!
Why We Love Rock Star Romance
Jade C. Jamison
OMG! I don’t know what’s wrong with me. Is the lead singer really hot…or is it just ‘cause he’s playing the guitar, too?!
There’s a meme that’s been circulating the ‘net for years that goes something like that, and it’s because there’s an underlying truth to it. Rock stars do get lots of chicks and it’s probably because there’s something inherently sexy about a guy slinging an axe.
But why do we love rock star romance books so much? Well, I’ve been writing this particular subgenre of contemporary romance since 2011—and, thanks to interacting with some of the most awesome readers on the planet and discussing the ins and outs of our infatuation—I think I’ve come up with a few answers. Does one of these sound like you?
I would never sleep with a rock star—especially one I just met!
But after watching a good looking, sinewy, tattooed rock star sing sad or sexy lyrics on stage (or play your emotions with the sound of his guitar), you might be feeling a little amorous. So you might pounce your partner but have the sexy rock star in mind while you do the deed. But what if your partner’s not around or you’re currently single? And what if said real life rock star actually did proposition you? Well, we all know there are a few gals who would take up said rock star on his offer…but there are lots of us who wouldn’t. Several good reasons come to mind: STDs, guilt, feeling used and abused, for starters. But the fantasy? Well, that’s awesome, because in a good rock star romance, not only do we attract the rock star, we eventually wind up in a relationship with him, too! And, hey, if our reading makes us feel a little amorous, that just might spice up our real love life.
I love the references to real music and bands because music is something I love in my day-to-day life.
While there are fictional bands, songs, and characters in rock star romance books, lots of authors also reference real songs and real bands, so when we hear that the band we’re reading about sounds like one of our favorite real life bands, we have a connection to that book. We understand and appreciate it more deeply than if the author hadn’t added that reference.
I love living the dream through fictional rock bands or watching them struggle to become known. Because it feels real, I can experience what it might be like in real life.
You might not be a musician, but rock star romance gives you a chance to experience what it might be like for a band when they go on tour, play onstage, experience fans, record music, live their dream. It’s a place you’d love to be. But maybe you’re married with kids or perhaps you can’t sing to save your soul (or you can, but the idea of getting onstage in front of thousands of fans freaks you out!). That dream might not be reachable, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy it vicariously!
There was this one guy…
One time, long ago, in high school perhaps, there was this guy. There was something about him, something mysterious…and he played drums for his garage rock band. You watched him play a few times and you always dreamed you’d hook up—but you didn’t. And now, years later, you wonder what’s happened to him (and Facebook hasn’t been any help at all). Well, maybe you’ll just have to imagine what became of him—and a good book can assist with that!
Musicians are the quintessential bad boys. Sex, drugs, possibly dark pasts. Sometimes they ride motorcycles. They’re usually covered in ink. They are the ultimate bad boys.
They’re the guys breaking things (guitars, bottles, windows…hearts). They’re the ones doing 100 down the freeway, drinking shot after shot at the bar, and then picking a fight with the scariest mofo in the joint. And then, the next day, they’re onstage singing about it. He might even have a sexy scar or two. Maybe he lets you inside a bit so you can see the pain buried deep that’s spurned all this self-destructive behavior.
Most of the time, in real life, we don’t wanna marry bad boys. We can’t actually fix them—it’s something they need to do on their own—but it’s still fun to fantasize. That bad boy would be exciting, from enjoying uninhibited sex in strange places to wondering what trouble he’s going to get into next. But it’s fictional fun you can read while snuggling in bed next to your stable, sweet, safe hubby!
Music is hot. The man creating it? Hotter.
Musicians somehow seem more passionate about the world. All artists almost seem tapped into another plain of existence, and they share that insight with us. But the difference between Avenged Sevenfold and Salvador Dali is performance. You can pay to see the band play live, and each show is a little different—and it’s for you! Other artists’ work is captured and preserved and displayed for the whole world to see, but performance is fleeting. And, unlike a painting or even a poem, music is an audible art form, so our brains respond to it differently. Musicians communicate their emotions and thoughts through their music—their triumphs and their tragedies—and we respond to them. In a book, we can imagine our favorite rock star digging from the depths of his soul to pour out his guts into a song. We watch him fight his inner demons. And if he has a struggle and we see him find his happy? Well…it makes us happy, too!
I’m front row at the concert, a show I’ve been dying to see for forever. And, holy crap, the lead guitarist is soooooo hot.
Wait. What? Me? He’s staring at me?
OMG!
HE’S STARING AT ME!!!
And now I have a backstage pass. I think this is the best night of my life!
So…pure fantasy, but we can read about it, right? You bet we can—and now is the best time to do it. Hundreds of authors write wonderful tales in this particular romance subgenre, so the concert never has to end (and you never have to leave your couch to enjoy it).
When Jade C. Jamison isn’t attending concerts and drooling, she’s busy writing romance novels. Come say hi at at www.jadecjamison.com or check out her bestselling rockstar romance Bullet.
