Excerpt from Loved You Once

The Aldridge brothers are like a force of nature. They’re like volcanic lightning, fire
tornados, bismuth crystals, nacreous clouds, or typhoons echoing through lost caverns. They’re
passionate and chaotic. They carry the strength and wisdom of redwood forests and the pride and
anger of minor gods. Am I giving them too much credit by painting them to be larger than life?
…Perhaps.
It’s all about perspective. Some people compare them to a nuclear meltdown.
To say they’re interesting is an understatement. The Aldridge brothers are handsome, arrogant, and sinful.
Henry, the hotel mogul, is callous.
Hayes, the doctor, is handsome, nerdy, and detached.
Pierce, the lawyer, is an unrelenting know-it-all.
Mills, the hockey player, is reckless.
Vance, the former Delta Force member, is impulsive.
Beacon, the heartthrob musician, is rebellious.

Make sure to add as fuck to each of them. They all have an alpha side that’s infuriating,
I haven’t heard from them since their brother, Carter, died. Until their father died two weeks
ago and they came barging back into my life. Am I ready to face my past?

I don’t know. All I care about is what I’ll get at the end of this deal. This will be like
walking through a rose field under a volcanic eruption. Once I cross the bridge into their world,
there’s no going back.

MORE ABOUT LOVED YOU ONCE

After a week off the grid, I finally get reception and the first voicemail I hear stuns me.
“You’re summoned to Baker’s Creek by the late William Tower Alderidge.”

Twelve Years.
It’s been twelve years since the last time I heard from the Alderidge family.
That one voicemail changes everything—I need the money the late William offers.
In exchange, I have to live eighteen months in Baker’s Creek.
I’ve survived cancer, the jungle, and the plague.
This should be easy compared to all that, right?
Or so I think until...I see him.
Confident, charismatic, bitter, sexy as hell, Doctor Hayes Benjamin Aldrige.
My first love, my first kiss—my late husband’s brother.
He hates me.
He still hasn’t forgiven me for walking out on him, and I can’t blame him. It’s been over ten years, and I still have feelings for him.
But I faked it once and I can fake it twice.
I can survive eighteen months and that’ll be the last time I see the Alderidge brothers.
Isn’t it?

My heart picks up its pace as I swing open the door to my temporary apartment. The paper I left between the door and the frame didn’t fall. The shoe I placed right in front of the entrance is now a couple of feet away from where I stand. I hold my breath searching for my hair accessories inside my tote bag. I pull out a metal chopstick. My eyes scan the living room and the kitchen. I swear, if whoever broke in is still here, they are not leaving in one piece. I might have to call Tiago to take care of the body.
I slip off my shoes. A prickle climbs the back of my neck as I hear some noise outside the apartment. Someone is lurking around. I order my body to wait instead of reacting, but it’s hard to remain still when my heart hammers fast against my ribs. I only have two hands and two chopsticks handy, and there could be two intruders . . . or more. Who could possibly be here? Only my boss, my brothers, and my father know where I am. And why would they care to find me when I’m here only to gather information?
I take a few steps toward the bedroom. From the corner of my eye, I see the doorknob turning slowly. I move toward the wall, pressing my back against it. Then I slide slowly, my hand gripping the metallic stick like a knife. I lift my hand as the door flies open and I charge toward the intruder.
“Luna, stop!”
I freeze.
The mention of my name makes me reconsider my next move. Though, I leave the sharp edge of the fake chopstick on the neck of the intruder, almost cutting through the skin. The pale-blue-eyed guy from the elevator stares at me. He stands tall, his broad, muscular frame blocking the doorway. His muscles seem to gape from his fitted black shirt. With all that dry blood on his ripped forearms and bruises around his face, he screams trouble. I just thought he was yet another agent.
“Who sent you?”
His breathing is shallow. His hands lift up in the air, his eyes move to the back of the room. “What the fuck, Tiago?” His voice is loud, rough.
“Tiago?” I sigh, rolling my eyes.
Without lowering the chopstick against his skin, I crank my neck slightly and see my oldest brother coming out of my room. The other intruder. “What are you doing here, Santiago Federico?”
“She’s your sister, isn’t she?” the man in front of me questions my brother, who gives him a sharp nod.
“I’m going to lower my hands and take a step back,” the man in front of me warns me.
“What are you two doing here?” I ask one more time, stepping away . . . I angle my head, narrowing my gaze. “Who are you?”
“Luna, this is Harrison. Harrison, meet Luna.”
I snap my head toward my brother, narrowing my eyes. “What are you two doing in my apartment?”
“The FBI is failing.” Harrison ignores me. “This building isn’t safe for her. I suggest we move her to a more secure area.”
“Her is here, and she can hear you.” I put the sharp edge of my weapon under his chin again. “I think your horoscope said something about shutting up or you might die a slow death.”
He rolls his eyes, grabbing my wrist with both hands and trying to snatch the chopstick. I tilt my head, swing my left foot under his knees and using my free hand, push him on the chest. His eyes widen as he loses his balance and falls. My brother laughs when I put my foot on top of his throat.
Harrison grabs my ankle with both hands. We stare at each other waiting for the next move. I’m ready for him to pull it. My next move is kicking him in the nose. But we remain still for several seconds. He smiles at me. My heart skips a couple of beats as his dimples deepen.
“You’re wrong. My horoscope mentioned something about meeting the girl of my dreams.” He winks at me.
“Sweet talking me won’t distract me. Don’t move,” I advise, pushing my foot closer to his neck.

MORE ABOUT FERVENT

As a former Army Ranger who works for a high intelligence, private security company, I’ve seen my fair share of death, betrayal, and pain.

I’ve lived them.
I trust no one, only my brothers, and my best friend.
I wasn’t always like that. Everything changed the day my parents died and my nation was attacked.
Since then, family comes first. Work is my mistress.
Nothing else matters.
That is, until she walked into my life.
Short dress, long, tanned legs, and honey eyes that make me weak.
She’s chaos.
She’s sunshine and daffodils.
She’s loud.
She’s a fighter.
She’s a dreamer.
She’s everything I hate.
Why is it so hard to walk away from her?

I break my rules giving her all of me while expecting all of her.

Unique & Intense Romance

EXCERPT

Picture
You know that show you watch religiously where you’re hoping the guy will slay the demons? Well, that’s not what’s happening here. This episode ends with the guy leaving the show. Looking at her for what could be the last time, I wish I had time to touch all of her. At least a long, deep kiss while driving myself inside her. So deep we fuse together and nobody notices I’m right next to her. I don’t act on it, knowing if I do I might not be able to leave.
“This is it, isn’t it?” Her voice is low, soft, and as sad as her eyes.
“Yes.” With one word, I crash my world for a second time this week. I don’t have any deep words to sugarcoat my departure.
I hate to prove her right. She insisted I’d leave once I saw the real Willow.
Only days ago, I thought she’d be the one saving me. That special person who would erase the loneliness in my heart. Instead, she needs more saving than I can possibly give her. I wish I could tell her how she has become to mean so much to me; that when I leave, the most important piece of my heart will stay with her.
We are too damaged to be together. The specialist said there’s hope for her, a treatment which will give her control of her life. As for me, I have no fucking idea what’s next.
Clearing my throat, I make my case. A plea for her to understand my point and not to hate me when one day she looks back on today. This was my chance not to be the guy who pushed Willow Beesley off the ledge and abandoned her at the bottom of the cliff to bleed.
“Willow, you are loving, caring, talented, and passionate about everything that touches your life.” I kiss her hands.
“Save the speech, Hunter.” Her face is serious, her tone detached but I can hear the lingering hurt. God, this is going to kill me.
“Give me a chance to explain why you have to leave me and go on with your life.”
She touches the base of her delicate neck, frowning.
“This might seem like I’m the one who is leaving, but it’s you who will hopefully move to a better place.”
“We’re all broken, some a little more than others, Hunt. Please, this wasn’t your fault.”
“You know, yesterday I thought I had lost you forever.” I lift my hand, running the back of it around her delicate neck. Fuck, I’m going to miss her. “The seconds I held your lifeless body showed me how easily you could break me. You need someone stronger, someone, you don’t have to save. A man strong enough to stand by your side when life is tough and you can barely open your eyes.”

Anderson and I stand side by side, watching Heath walk to his black sedan and drive away.
“Even Cinderella stayed longer at the ball than you. What happened?” Anderson asks as the tail lights disappear.
“His daughter wasn’t feeling well.” I open the paper bag, pulling out a jar filled with light blue, lilac, and pink M&Ms.
“I lied.” He licks his upper lip, making my mouth water then switches his gaze from the jar to my lips twice, then meeting mine. “They’re only for you.”
The tone makes my knees buckle, my jaw slack and I want him to…
I raise the jar, he nods. “From your mom?” He shakes his head. “How? I mean, thank you, but it’s late.”
He lifts an arm slightly angling his head, giving me an ‘I have my ways’ look.
“Using your heroic skills to obtain chocolate, impressive.” I twist the jar open, taking a few pink ones and popping them into my mouth.
“We’ve talked about your storytelling abilities, they’re far-fetched.” Anderson laughs, shaking his head. “I went to buy a few things for Mom. There’s a candy store filled with this stuff. I thought of you.”
My heart stops. I work hard to sip some air, trying to hide my shock. Calm down, you’re overreacting. Act calm; laugh it off. It doesn’t mean a thing. “And here I thought you had broken into the shop for me.”
A smile plays on his face. “Really?” He narrows his gaze, observing me. Did he notice my astonishment? Can he see what his voice and his actions are doing to me?
“Yeah.” I touch my temple. “The whole Mission Impossible scene where Tom barely hangs from a rope and he almost triggers the alarm with a drop of sweat.”
He laughs reaching for the jar. I playfully push him with the lid. “Stay away from my candy.” … and from me.
“Sharing is caring.”
“I don’t share chocolate.” I wink at him taking a few light blue ones and placing them in the palm of his hand. Our skin touches, producing a current of electricity. Cut this short, go back to your room. “Sorry for the intense text.”
He cocks his head to the side, shifting his eyes from the jar to me. “Do you wanna go out for a ride?” His mellow voice is a warm sensation enveloping every cell of my body. He eats the chocolates I give him, waiting for an answer. “Drove the bike tonight.”
I look down at my outfit and the lovely heels I wore.
“Did I mention that you look beautiful tonight?” He takes the jar away from me but not his gaze. “Did you dance?”
“He was too busy chatting around.” The gala wasn’t fun, and I would have preferred to be at home hanging out with my friends and Sophia.
“Do you hear that?” He touches his ear, setting the stuff he carries on the porch couch. “May I have this dance?”
Anderson doesn’t wait for me to respond. He takes my left hand, brushing my knuckles with his mouth. His other arm goes around my back and he pulls me to his chest. “Relax and let me lead, just follow the music.”
I don’t hear music but I relax, resting my head on his chest. We sway slowly to our own rhythm, our own tune; some beat I can’t hear, but it’s catchy and soothing. Driving sounded great—dancing enveloped by his strong arms and surrounded by the whiff of his woodsy aroma is a thousand times better. Tonight, I don’t feel lonely or incomplete.
