SNEAK PEEK

“You did, but I turned it back on,” the deep voice rumbles throughout the space, and I scream in panic as I reach for my chest. Bending over, I rest my elbows on my knees trying to calm my breathing.
“You scared the living daylights out of me, Diesel.”
“Sorry,” he says, closer to me than he was before.
“If you’re trying to kill me, that’s the way to do it. Shit, my heart just stopped a million times already,” I let out as I stand. When my eyes lock with his, I notice how red they are. I swallow loudly, shifting from side to side as I’m not sure what to say.
“Where have you been? I’ve been calling you since you left. I even called the girls, and not one of them has heard from you since this morning. I was worried sick, Natasha.”
I listen to the words coming from his mouth, and I can’t respond. My mouth opens and shuts just as fast. “I… well, you see… I… What are you doing here?”
“Answer my question, where have you been?”
“First, you need to calm down, Diesel. I’m not digging your tone.”
“Do you know the longer you were gone and not answering your phone, my mind raced to where or whom you were with?”
“Don’t come into my house and assume you know anything about me or whom I’ve been with.”
“Natasha, please tell me where you were,” he says a little lower and calmer than before.
Before I say a word to him, I dig my phone out of my purse and notice that I had it on vibrate. Not to mention the simple fact that I left my purse and everything inside my car while I sat down and thought about life. I glance down at the screen and back up to Diesel before I speak.
“If it matters that much to you, I was at the Capital Building, sitting on the steps thinking—alone.”
“Why did you go there? You shouldn’t be out and about like that.”
“I needed to clear my head; it was either there or the courthouse. Thought I’d go back to the place where it all started for me.” Just as he goes to speak, my phone vibrates in my hands. When I look down it’s Morgan’s name flashing across the screen.
“Take it, they’re all worried sick about you.”
My finger slides against the glass, swiping it open to answer. “Hi, Morgan. I’m alive and well. You can call off the dogs.”
“Natasha Presley Kraft, this is not funny. Where the hell have you been? Jayden and I have been driving around looking for you. Not to mention, Zara and Frankie.”
“I was taking a time-out, so to speak, and I left my phone in the car. I’m home and just speaking with Diesel now. Will you call the girls and let them know that I am okay? We can meet tomorrow for lunch, if you’d like.”
“Fine, I’ll call them off, and you better be at the bakery for lunch or we will kidnap you.”
“Love you, Morgan.”
“Love you too, bye.”
“I’m going to grab something to drink, do you want anything?” I ask as I try to sidestep him. I’m not quick enough, because before I can move he has his arms around my waist, pulling me to his chest. With a low dip of my body, his lips crash down to mine. It’s not the soft, gentle, passionate way that he normally kisses me. No, this is covered in need, want, and mixed with fear. The pressure of his skin on mine is solid, unbreakable, and speaking louder than any words could ever speak in this moment. Lifting me up, our chests flat against each other, allowing me to feel the beat of his heart against me. Breaking apart, his words are labored, “You scared me, Natasha. I’ve been an ass the last few days, but if anything would’ve happened to you, I wouldn’t come out on the other side of it.
“I’ve been an ass too,” I say in return and then look around for Cassidy.
“Where’s Cassidy?”
“Mom’s, I wasn’t sure how tonight would go. Didn’t want her to overhear anything.”
“Good call,” I say, licking my lips.
Something about the way he’s staring at me causes me to want to do one thing and one thing only, while the other part of me says we need to talk before I allow him to do the ‘thing’ that I like for him to do. Being the reasonable one that I am, I shimmy out of his arms in order to back away, giving us some much- needed space. Clearing my throat, I say, “I think we need talk before things get out of hand and we’re back to where we are.”
“I agree,” Diesel says. It’s crazy how I can be full of so many words while he’s a man with none. Don’t get me wrong, he talks and all. Really, what man is all open and goofy with their feelings? I sure as heck haven’t met one yet who likes to showcase his heart to the world.
Sitting down on the sofa, I tuck my legs underneath me before reaching over to grab a throw pillow. My eyes examine the way Diesel moves around the kitchen, reaching for two wine glasses, allowing the material of his shirt to lift just enough to showcase the skin above his waistband. The way his arms flex as they go up and down. Instantly I lick my lips, dreaming of running my tongue up and down his chest. Earth to Natasha, I say to myself as I need to stop ogling my husband or we won’t ever get this chat over with. I mean, it’s a good thing to stare and want to worship his body like a temple, right? I just can’t act on it until we have our first major talk in our marriage.
“So, where do we start?” Diesel tosses out as he hands me my wine glass and takes a seat next to me.
“I think that’s the million-dollar question, isn’t it?”
“It doesn’t have to be,” he says so matter of fact like.
“Can I ask a question and you not get upset or bothered by it?”
“Sure,” he says, shrugging as if he’s not sure where I’m headed with this. Hell, for the most part, neither am I. Clearing my throat, I take a sip of the sweet liquid for confidence.

The final installment of the Taste of Love Series.
I said ‘I do’ to the first guy to sweep me off my feet after my heart shattered all those years ago. I didn’t just vow to love him; nope, I signed on that line for both him and his daughter.
This lifestyle is new and one that I never thought I'd want. Why? Because over the years, my job and friends were the most important thing to me. Don’t get me wrong, the girls are still my family. It’s just this tattooed mechanic changed my outlook on love. Let's not forget that the cute blonde-haired princess has me wrapped around her fingers, and I'd do anything to protect her.
Love isn’t always natural… Nope, and we already have a few problems to work through. I’m not his daughter’s mother, and the guy who broke my heart all those years ago works in the office next to me.
You guessed it, things are about to get a little spicy when love goes sideways.
